Vista (part2)

I tried to fix my vista installation.  Result; corrupt boot sector, followed closely by the dreaded “no operating system” message. A full disk format and many hours later its working and seems to be stable.  It should only take a short lifetime to get all of my settings and tweeks back how I like them.  Hey-Ho

I (up)graded to Vista last week.  My life has become miserable since.  If you’re considering doing it….DON’T

Just after Christmas I turned up at a clients and plugged in my 3G datacard. It wouldn’t work which I initially put down to my being a pratt and upgrading my laptop to Vista. I phoned Vodafone in the hope that they would say “yeah you’re a pillock for downgrading to vista but here’s the workaround”. But what they actually said was…. “er, you’ve run up a bit of a bill and the accounts been suspended for credit reasons” My retort…”er, eh what. I pay £25/month for an unlimited service, what you talkin’ ’bout …Willis” “Well sir, it seems that whilst you were in Romania you built up a bit of a bill. £4,874 to be exact.” It was at this point that I slipped into my Eddie Murphy mode with the only possible retort of “get the F$£k out of here!” (Beverly Hills Cop 2). Then they tried to tell me I’d transferred over a Gig of data in my three days there. It’s important to note that it’s a 12 hour trip each way and that I actually only spent one and a half days working in Romania, and some of that was through an ethernet cable onto the clients own network!

Fair play to Vodafone though. They were quick to offer to write of (most) of the cost and in addition, the customer services bloke (Nigel from he Banbury call centre) made the additional effort to call me later in the day to make sure I was happy with the compromise.

Well done Vodafone
